OSCAR MICHEAUX SPIRIT AWARD
1884-1951
First African American to produce a feature length film "The Homesteader" in 1919 and a sound feature film "The Exile".
After making and marketing over 40 movies, he died while marketing his last movie "The Betrayal" .
Pioneer of Independent Film. Micheaux, the Filmmaker is a symbol of the Artist triumphing over long odds to bring
his vision to the public at large while serving in the socially important role of critical spirit.
Provided a diverse portfolio of non-stereotyped Black characters: musicials, comedies, westerns, romance, gangsters,
while Hollywood was portraying African Americans as Dolts, Uncle Toms, Mammies and Bucks.
