OSCAR MICHEAUX LEGACY AWARD

1884-1951

This award is given in honor of the first African American to produce a feature length film "The Homesteader" in 1919 and a sound feature film "The Exile". After making and marketing over 40 movies, he died while marketing his last movie "The Betrayal" .

M. LEGEND BROWN- 2016 RECIPIENT

My journey has been similar to Oscar Micheaux. I start out learning this craft from the public library. I am a self-taught filmmaker. But I've always bored bunt of just going out and getting the production done. Like the namesake of the award I've always worked outside of the Hollywood machine and told stories that encourage and uplifted our community. I believe that we need to tell our stories because no one can tell our stories better than us. There are many facets of our stories that aren't being told. I have a soft spot in my heart for the average stories from an African American point of view.

If we do not our comprise with equipment, talent or production value. Our films and stories will hold up against the best of them.
