Sidney Thompson is the author of The Bass Reeves Trilogy (Follow the Angels, Follow the Doves/Hell on the Border/The Forsaken and the Dead), the inspiration for the Paramount+ miniseries Lawmen: Bass Reeves, directed by Taylor Sheridan and starring David Oyelowo, Dennis Quaid, and Donald Sutherland.

Thompson has received numerous honors for his historical trilogy, including the Bass Reeves Legacy Preservation Trailblazer Award in 2022 from the Bass & Belle Wild West Film Festival and the 2021 International AAHGS Book Award for Historical Fiction: Event/Era from the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society. He holds a Ph.D. in American literature/African American narratives from the University of North Texas and an M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of Arkansas.

He was born in Memphis, Tennessee, though currently lives in Fort Worth, Texas, where he teaches creative writing and African American literature at Texas Christian University.
